I have been thinking recently about we can develop a better picture and a broader overview of individual subjects. I think this is important in order to get a sense of the journey that our pupils and students go on as they encounter a subject across the key stages.
So, I’ve come up with five steps with examples from geography to start the conversations!
Step one is to take a look at the purpose statements from the national curriculum documents: these paint the big picture for each of the subjects. The subject overview for geography for example can be found here.
Steph two is to read how Tom Brassington plans and develops the geography curriculum in his primary school. This chapter is from Primary Huh and is free to access.
Step three is to read how Dr David Preece plans and develops the geography curriculum in the secondary context. This chapter is from Secondary Huh and is free to access.
Step four involves taking a look at what primary colleagues are doing as they work on their curriculum, through the primary subject networks (£/free access for 7 days)
Step five means checking out what secondary colleagues are doing as they work on their curriculum for example talking about how they use high quality texts in geography at key stage 3. (£/free access for 7 days)
And here’s the link to access the complete sequence!
And we’ve made the overviews and the chapters free to access for the other subjects too.
Feedback welcome!
Until next time
Mary
PS
I’m looking forward to the next round of the Huh Leadership Lobby starting in September. It’s a blended, self-paced course with live check-ins, led by me and Andrew Morrish. It is designed for aspiring, new and established leaders. and here’s what one colleague had to say about it!
‘Wow there is SO much leadership gold here. Loved the session on leading trustfully and hearing Mary and Andrew discuss the ‘messy middle’ of getting this right.’
