We know it’s easier to remember things if we’ve heard them in a story or a high quality narrative.
It’s also backed up by plenty of research including the ‘Just read’ trial from the University of Sussex which found that just reading complex novels aloud, and at a fast pace over 12 weeks with Year 8 pupils, resulted in ‘poorer readers’ making a whopping 16 months’ progress in the time.
In one primary school, 93% of pupils in Year 2 made at least 6 months progress in 12 weeks. You can see what Gayle Fletcher and Lauren Haines found in their primary school here.
I think it’s important to use these insights when we’re teaching the foundation subjects in primary.
So at The Teachers’ Collection, we’ve made a sample of the plans and vocabularly list free to access.
You can find them here!
Until next time
