Supporting pupils with SEND to access the curriculum
Well hello there, and welcome to update #115!
There can be a tendency to think that pupils with additional needs can’t cope with an ambitious curriculum.
However, there is plenty of evidence to show that they are in fact capable of getting to grips with rich, demanding content.
I’ll be drawing on research from Daniel Willingham, Julia Sutherland and Jo Westbrook to show that it is possible for pupils, including those with additional needs, to access an ambitious curriculum.
SEND expert Gary Aubin’s has a helpful metaphor: he makes the case that we should consider creating the curriculum like ‘automatic doors’: useful for all and essential for some. When we do this, no pupil is left out.
I will take the ‘automatic doors’ approach and show how we can use it to open up the curriculum for all our pupils in geography, history and RE. She will take some concepts underpinning the subjects and provide examples of making them accessible for all.
Each session will include a draft planning unit for KS1, KS2 and KS3.
