The curriculum is an ongoing project. This is why the collection of curriculum conversations John Tomsett and I had with colleagues across the sector is called ‘Huh’. There are two reasons for this:
The first is that Huh is the Egyptian god of regeneration, creativity and everlasting things; and the second is that when we were talking with subject and curriculum experts, we often found ourselves saying ‘Huh? I didn’t know that!’
The great thing about treating curriculum development as an ongoing piece of work is that we are free to refine and adapt as we come across better insights and resources that are likely to have great impact on pupils’ learning.
I believe that it means that we need to lean into the ongoing process, and not beat ourselves up if we think the plans aren’t quite ready - they never will be!
So let’s stop putting ourselves under too much pressure. Instead, let’s treat curriculum development as an iterative, enjoyable process over time.
For my part, I love a chinwag about the curriculum and it was great to talk with Emma McCrea, head of curriculum design at Oak National Academy!
Would be good to know what you think!
Until next time
