It can be tempting to think that we are going to ‘nail’ something, for example our curriculum plans, and to think that the job is done. But then we realise that there’s more to do and that the work is never likely to be finished! There are two responses to this:
Either we get stressed and overwhelmed, or we accept that curriculum development is an ongoing process. The good news is that this means we can take our time, there’s no need to rush it, because we want to be able to breathe into the process and hopefully to enjoy it. After all, isn’t that why we came into the profession?
When John Tomsett and I were looking for a way of capturing the essence of curriculum work, John came across ‘Huh’, the Egyptian god of regeneration, creativity and everlasting things: a perfect summary of this work!
And so the Huh curriculum books were published and now the Huh Academy to accommodate the demand for ongoing support for curriculum development.
Over the last year, John and I have been running live courses on curriculum leadership and we’ve distilled the content and resources into a new evergreen course, that you can follow in your own time. And if you’d like to touch base with John and me about how you’re getting on, you can join us for live check-in sessions twice a term.
Here’s what we cover
1. Ways of working, curriculum triumvirate, primary and secondary distinctiveness
2. Principles of curriculum design
3. Sequencing and progression
4. Cognitive science and learning the curriculum
5. Intent
6. Implementation
7. Impact
8. Supporting staff, sustaining momentum
The course provides two places for colleagues from each school, because we know it’s better to have someone to bounce ideas around with plus five annual subscriptions to Myatt & Co so you can support other colleagues with their subject knowledge.
John and I are running a Q&A webinar on Monday 18 Sep 17.30 if you’d like to find out more and if you’re not able to make it, the session will be recorded.
Until next time
Mary
