Reading out loud is a great strategy even for middle school and high school. Totally underestimated and ignored by many.
But this year I've had a new issue: They will not follow along when we read our current novel or short story together. Like, not at all. They will listen, but simply refuse to follow. Doesn't matter much by May, but still puzzling.
That's interesting Adam but I don't think it's the end of the world, as the main thing is that they are listening. It will still be having impact as the written word is of greater lexical depth and complexity than the spoken word, so it will still be developing their vocabulary and comprehension. Also I think a lot of pupils are tired, just like teachers! Thanks for taking the time to comment. Bw Mary
I absolutely love reading aloud to my students and throw as many accents and as much personality into it as I can. I’d be interested in recording things that other teachers can use - is there any evidence that recordings are beneficial?
We have completed our second faster reading project with amazing progress for most learners across our primary school in Wales.
That's great to hear Sarah, would love to follow up with you on this, my email: mary@marymyatt.com Thanks!
